A Tribute to LA TV Station KTLA
with Emmy-Winning Television Producer/Director
JOEL TATOR
In January of 1947, the first commercially-licensed TV station in Los Angeles (known
prior as experimental station W6XYZ), went on the air as KTLA channel 5 in a city that
only had about 350 television sets in homes at the time. At first it was owned and
operated by Paramount Pictures (the ONLY movie studio in Hollywood brave enough to
make the decision to embrace TV while the others resisted for years). In the late
1940s and early 1950s, it was the first TV home of many great stars including Stan Freberg
and Lawrence Welk. JOEL TATOR, The Emmy-winning author of "Los Angeles Television",
began working in the mailroom there when he was just 18 years old in 1960. He got into
the news department in 1962, remained there until 1966, went to work for both CBS and
NBC (and producing and directing "The Tomorrow Show" with Tom Snyder), and then returned
to KTLA in 1986 where he stayed through 1998, producing and honing "The KTLA Morning
News" along the way. Joel is also a respected TV historian, so he and your genial host
will be taking a fond look back at KTLA's first 25 or so years (that's all we'll have
time for), and fortunately before ownership changed, Joel and I both were able to
salvage a ton of kinescopes and old video tapes when they were tossed in dumpsters.
Please join us for a visual look back at local LIVE television - variety shows, kid
shows, game shows, sports, and news events of the past...and of course, we'll read
your e-mails!
